After I found out that a young badger has taken over the sett of an old badger who had passed away due to an injury, I discovered there was a side entrance to the sett on a nearby slope which also showed signs of being used.
I set up a trail camera to monitor the entrance, thinking the young badger was also using that side entrance, but the footage from the trail camera showed a fox, or more likely a pair of foxes, used that entrance.
With the footage showing the foxes, it became apparent that the sett is shared by unexpected roommates – the badger as well as the foxes, though each uses their own entrance.
This way it’s probably for the best, for badgers are known to keep their setts clean, whereas foxes are known to be messy, often leaving pieces of unfinished food about to rot.
